There is no doubt that there are many competencies needed in the profiles of the head greenkeepers y groundsmen for the execution of the various tasks that we face in our day-to-day work. This includes knowledge of agronomy, finance, human resources, etc., as well as extensive experience.

Until recently, the most suitable profiles for these jobs were those with the highest knowledge in these areas and high IQ values were desired.

The concept of IQ was forged in 1903 by Alfred Binet (1857 - 1911), from what later emerged in 1905 as the first intelligence test. In 1908, the Binet-Simon test was translated into English and in 1912, the German Stern introduced the term IQ (intelligence quotient). Source: Emotional intelligence in education (Rafel Bisquerra et al, 2015).

Nobody doubted the importance of IQ as a criterion for excellence in the workplace.

It was in 1990 that the first theoretical formulation of a new concept emerged: emotional intelligence. This is presented through two articles published in 1990 by researchers Peter Salovey and John Mayer. Specifically, one of them is entitled Emotional Intelligence (Salovey and Mayer, 1990). This was followed by the publication of Emotional Intelligence (Goleman, 1995), a worldwide best seller, which led to the worldwide launch of the concept of emotional intelligence in the business world, especially in the areas of leadership and employee development (a form of adult education).

In this regard, the Harvard Business Review has gone so far as to describe the emotional intelligence as "a revolutionary concept, one of the most influential ideas of the decade" in the world of work. There is a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and different indicators of leadership (Harms and Credé, 2010; Walter, Cole and Humphrey, 2011).

Emotional awareness is about knowing one's own emotions and the emotions of others.

The best personnel managers are those people who arouse enthusiasm and are capable of mobilising it. These people have high levels of intelligence, personality, assertiveness, planning, language skills, the ability to convince and persuade, motivate, transmit enthusiasm, etc.

Emotional awareness and regulation should be considered basic competences for the greenkeepersThe person who has acquired them is in a better position to face daily challenges. Ultimately, they are essential elements in managing relationships with our maintenance staff and customers.

The head greenkeeper, with his attitudes and behaviour, can offer a climate of security, respect and trust to the employees.
