Disinfection of irrigation water must be ensured for compliance with Royal Decree 865/2003 and salt chlorination can be an excellent way to comply.

The chlorine is widely and effectively used as a disinfectant, as it quickly destroys bacteria and other micro-organisms, making the water safe and suitable for spraying by sprinkler irrigation.

Producing chlorine locally saves on transport and storage costs

After all, traditional injection uses many litres of sodium hypochlorite to enable this disinfection, so in order to avoid the costs and risks of transporting and storing the product, there are systems for generating chlorine by electrolysis of common salt (NaCl).

High safety precautions must be taken to administer chlorine in tanks, and producing chlorine locally has great practical advantages.

The advantages start with not having to handle the product, only salt is handled to refill the tank, avoiding the risk of accidents. In addition, on-site production eliminates the need for a product supplier.

Electrolysis equipment allows the sodium to be separated from the chlorine so that it is not applied to the soil with irrigation.

The cost of generation is much lower than the purchase of sodium hypochlorite, so the initial installation may be more expensive, but not in the long term. The only cost is the maintenance of membranes and anodes.

The great thing about chlorine production systems is that the ions can be separated by membranes to obtain a brine where the sodium accumulates and the chlorine is separated. The chlorine will be used to irrigate with clean water without damaging the soil with the sodium, and the sodium stays in a separate tank that can be used as a very powerful general herbicide.
