Table of contents: The invisible role of soil in turfgrass health: biological balance and innovative biological solutions (2/2)

In the first part of this series we look at how soil is much more than just a physical support: it is a dynamic ecosystem, full of biological interactions that directly influence the health and performance of sports turf. In this second installment we take a closer look at three innovative biological solutions from Abundigro -Gladiator, Ukelp y OxyTurf- that represent invaluable tools for the greenkeepers that aim for sustainable and efficient management of the turfgrass.

Gladiator: internal strength thanks to silicon

Although silicon is not considered an essential nutrient, it plays a decisive role in the ability of plants to cope with stressful situations. Gladiator provides bioavailable monosilicic acid 100 %, together with Calcium and Boron, which translates into a synergy that reinforces both the cell walls and the plant's defensive metabolic processes.

In sports turf, Gladiator helps:

  • Create a mechanical barrier against diseases and pests.
  • Modulating metabolic defencesreducing the impact of abiotic stress (drought, heat, salinity).
  • Improve the nutrient absorptionoptimising the efficiency of fertilisation.

It can be applied both via foliar and root system, and is a safe, compatible product with extensive scientific and field validation. A dose of 500ml/Ha. is recommended. Mix in a tank of 300-1000l of water for each Ha. Add Gladiator to water with constant stirring and then add other foliar products as required. Use within 4 hours.

Ukelp: vital energy from the sea

The extract of Ecklonia maximaobtained by a cold-pressing process, preserves intact its bioactive compounds - plant hormones, amino acids, vitamins, betaines, polysaccharides and minerals - which are decisive for the vitality of the grass.

The most important benefits of Ukelp in turf are:

  • Mayor root developmentwith deeper and more robust systems.
  • Increased stress tolerance (drought, heat, cold, salinity).
  • Activation of the natural defence mechanisms against pathogens.
  • Improved photosynthesis and the greening of the lawn through increased chlorophyll synthesis.
  • Stimulation of soil microbiomeThe soil is more fertile, promoting beneficial micro-organisms and a more fertile soil.

In addition to promoting faster germination and better implantation, Ukelp is a resource for sustainable and organicin line with the current demands of environmental management in sports fields. Apply 3 to 10 l per hectare, depending on the needs of the turf. Apply as a foliar spray or with watering every 2 to 4 weeks.

OxyTurf: oxygen to revitalise soil profile

Oxygen is essential for root respiration and for the activity of beneficial soil micro-organisms. However, compaction, excess moisture and the build-up of thatch often limit their availability in the turf profile.

OxyTurf contributes slow release oxygenIt contains plant extracts that stimulate microbial and enzymatic activity. Its main effects on turfgrass are:

  • Decomposition of the thatch and unblocking of pores, favouring percolation.
  • Prevention of black layers and dead zonesreplaced by a balanced aerobic ecosystem.
  • Improvement of soil structureincreasing the efficiency of water and nutrient absorption.
  • Increased root volume and massThe result is a more stable turf with better playing qualities.

Apply OxyTurf at a rate of 10 to 20 litres/hectare once per month by irrigation. This helps improve soil aeration, percolation and felt degradation, resulting in a healthier, more resilient turf. It can also be applied as a foliar spray. Apply OxyTurf to 5% as a foliar spray to improve systemic acquired resistance and support overall turfgrass health. This method helps reduce disease incidence and improve turf vigor.

Micropinning and joint applications: Ninja Tines as an ally

To maximise the efficacy of these biological solutions, it is recommended that they be applied after a micropinning with Ninja Tines. This technique creates micro-channels in the turf profile that:

  • They facilitate the homogeneous input liquid products such as Gladiator, Ukelp and OxyTurf.
  • Improve the natural oxygenation and the water infiltration.
  • They reduce compaction without affecting the playability of the terrain.

In this way, the combination of micro-pinch and biological applications multiplies the benefits, promoting a healthier, more resilient and sustainable turf.

Modern sports turf management requires a holistic view of the soil, not as a mere substrate, but as a living system in need of balance and support. Gladiator, Ukelp and OxyTurf offer proven biological solutions which, integrated into maintenance programmes and complemented with techniques such as micro-pinch Ninja TinesThe new, more durable, sustainable and higher quality playing surfaces can be achieved.

The future of the greenkeeping is written from below: on the ground, invisible to the naked eye, but decisive with every step and every game.
