The Spanish Rugby Federation is determined to raise the Rugby to the position it deserves. In order to realise its expectations, it published the new rugby field approval regulations at the beginning of 2017.

Still from the point of view of player safety, this new homologation is based on the "World Rugby"the rules NIDE Regulations on Sports and Leisure Facilities"." and the standard UNE-45959-1.

It provides for accreditation in four different categories: the first three (1st, 1stb, 2nd). These are categories for teams playing in Division of Honour A and higher competitions. For the División de Honor B league, there is category 3, which is more permissive and facilitates entry to the competition for teams with fewer resources.

As Lord Kelvin said:

"What is not defined cannot be measured, what is not measured cannot be improved and what is not improved is always degraded".

And that is precisely what the approval does: it measures. Thanks to the auditor's examination of the technical team responsible for the care and maintenance of the pitch, it is possible to have the vision of a third person with no ties to the pitch but with agronomic and management knowledge. In this way, points of improvement in the maintenance of the pitch or other problems, which are difficult to detect without the necessary technology, can be objectively highlighted.

Audits not only provide accreditation for the Federation. Valuable information can also be extracted, which makes it possible to stop managing a site solely on the basis of experience and intuition, and to start making verifiable decisions based on objective and concrete data. Some of the tests carried out are infiltration rate, hardness or rotational traction, among others. The sum of the tests help to avoid injuries to the players and to guarantee the quality of the sports field.

And it is for all the above reasons that the FER wishes to audit and homologate all the fields of its top leagues.
