Table of contents: Elite Biostimulation with GAIA SEA-X: A revolution in Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed extract

In the maintenance of high-performance sports turf, heat stress, compaction, low mowing heights and environmental constraints pose increasingly demanding challenges. To maintain leaf density, growth rate and root health without resorting to excessive fertilisation, biostimulants have become an indispensable tool.

In this article, we take an in-depth look at the range GAIA SEA-X, based on pure seaweed extract Ascophyllum nodosum, assessing the specific features of its four options (Base, Gold, Guard and Legacy), the best times to use them and tips on how to get the most out of them.

Ascophyllum nodosum: Elite Biostimulant and its benefits

The main ingredient in the GAIA SEA-X range is brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, sustainably harvested from the cold waters of the North Atlantic.

GAIA SEA-X It is extracted mechanically at a temperature below 30°C and without the addition of chemicals, preserving the bioactive spectrum intact and maintaining a natural pH of 4.5, which ensures maximum compatibility in tank blends.

Mechanisms of action and benefits

  • Deep root development: Stimulation of lateral roots and root hairs using natural auxins and cytokinins, which is vital in sandy (USGA) soil profiles with low Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC).
  • Mitigation of abiotic stress: Contains mannitol (a cellular osmoprotectant) and betaines, which help maintain cell turgor during heatwaves.
  • Antioxidant Protection (ROS): Polyphenols that neutralise the free radicals generated by high levels of solar radiation.
  • Resistance to Treading and Wear: Cytokinins that break apical dominance, promoting tillering and increasing the density and physical buffering capacity of the vegetation cover.

GAIA SEA-X range

GAIA SEA-X (Base 100% Pure Algae)

  • Composition: 100% pure extract from Ascophyllum nodosum.
  • Function: The biostimulant foundation of the programme. It boosts overall metabolism, stimulates the root zone and strengthens the plant against abiotic stress.
  • When to use:
    • Summer pre-season training (June): Apply before the hot weather sets in to encourage deeper root growth.
    • Routine maintenance: From the start of spring until autumn, as a regular preventative treatment.
  • Dosage: 5–20 litres per hectare in 400–800 litres of water every 14–21 days.

GAIA SEA-X Gold (Seaweed + Amino Acids + Fulvic Acids)

  • Composition: Seaweed extract (6%), Marine protein (6%), Fulvic acids (10%), Free amino acids (2%) and Organic nitrogen (2%).
  • Function: It provides direct energy without any metabolic cost to the plant. Fulvic acids act as organic chelating agents that reduce nitrate leaching in sandy soils.
  • When to use:
    • Post-mowing maintenance (Pricking / Aeration / Scarification): A supply of amino acids to speed up cell division and seal the puncture holes in half the time.
    • High-wear tips: For lawns subject to heavy foot traffic and low-cut mowing.
  • Dosage: 10 to 20 litres every 2 to 4 weeks or as required.

GAIA SEA-X Guard (Seaweed + Magnesium 4% + Iron 3%)

  • Composition: Algae-based biostimulant enriched with magnesium (4%) and iron (3%).
  • Function: It boosts chlorophyll synthesis and cellular oxygen transfer, resulting in a deep, rich green colour without forcing vegetative growth.
  • When to use:
    • Summer maintenance in the height of summer: It enables the deep green colour required to be maintained without applying synthetic nitrogen, which would stress the plant or encourage fungal growth.
    • Protection and appearance in winter: It maintains the plant’s appearance during periods of frost and short days when root uptake is blocked.
  • Dosage:10 litres per hectare every 28 days. For severe deficiencies, apply 20 litres per hectare.

GAIA SEA-X Legacy: The most comprehensive option

  • Highly concentrated formula: Ascophyllum nodosum + Fulvic acids + 4 chelated micronutrients (Fe 5%, Mg 5%, Mn 1%, Zn 1%).
  • Function:Fulvic acids chelate nutrients trapped in the clay-humic complex or in the sand, restoring the biology of the rhizosphere following periods of degradation or severe stress.
  • When to use it
    • Early spring: The end of winter, with cold soil and immobilised nutrients.
    • Post-summer recovery: Urgent lawn recovery following prolonged heatwaves.
    • Recovery following frost or severe weather: It acts as an intensive treatment to repair cellular tissue damaged by the cold.
  • Dosage: 10 to 20 litres every 2 to 4 weeks or as required.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What sets GAIA SEA-X apart from other conventional seaweed extracts on the market?

The main difference lies in the extraction method. Whilst most methods use high-temperature alkaline digestion, which breaks down the natural hormones, GAIA SEA-X is extracted at low temperatures (<30°C). This preserves the phytohormones, amino acids, mannitol and polyphenols at their natural acidic pH (4.5).

Can I use the GAIA SEA-X range alongside my usual plant protection treatments?

Yes, thanks to its natural pH of 4.5 and its cold-extraction process, it is highly compatible for tank-mixing with most fungicides, insecticides and foliar fertilisers.
The only exception: It must not be mixed directly with products containing high concentrations of free calcium.

When should I use GAIA SEA-X Gold instead of GAIA SEA-X Guard?

Use Gold when the plant needs rapid recovery and energy (post-pruning, unpacked), as it provides free amino acids and organic nitrogen. Use Guard when you’re looking for to maintain a deep green colour and density during periods when you do not want to stimulate vegetative growth with nitrogen.

Do I still need to apply conventional NPK fertilisers if I use GAIA SEA-X?

Yes. Biostimulants do not replace NPK fertilisation, but rather complement it. GAIA SEA-X improves the Nutrient Use Efficiency reducing leaching losses in sandy soils and enabling the total amount of synthetic fertiliser applied to be optimised or reduced.

How often is it recommended to apply GAIA SEA-X during the peak season?

The agronomic recommendation for elite sports turf is to carry out regular applications every 14 to 21 days in split doses. Maintaining constant levels of biostimulation in the plant is far more effective than carrying out one-off, large-scale applications.
