Description
The reader for soil moisture FieldScout is designed for sensors WaterScout SMEC 300 y SM 100ideal for spot-check sampling and maintenance checks in the field. The connection is immediate by means of 3.5 mm stereo jack and is also able to read Watermark sensors by means of the specific adapter. All in a compact package that includes soft carrying case.
Why this reader (and no other)
FieldScout guarantees reliable and repeatable readings. With the sensor SM100 (capacitive) provides an immediate response to changes in humidity and a direct reading of the volumetric water content (VWC)calibrated for mineral soils and soilless substrates. With the sensor SMEC300 information is added on humidity, temperature and electrical conductivity (EC)It provides a complete picture of the water status and salinity of the profile. Thanks to its stereo quick-plug connectorthe system is plug & play in the field and also allows the reading of Watermark by means of an adapter. This approach makes it a professional methodologydesigned for precision agriculturegreenkeeping and technical gardeningwhere irrigation decisions must be based on data.
How it works (capacitive soil moisture sensor)
The reader works with capacitive sensors such as the SM100 and the SMEC300, which measure the dielectric constant of the soildirectly related to the volumetric water content. This ensures stable data and less sensitive to salinity or temperature than basic resistive sensors. To sample: connect the sensor to the reader via the stereo connector, insert it to the desired depth (7-12 cm in turf, deeper in orchards or vineyards), wait a few seconds for it to stabilise and record the reading. If using sensors Watermark via adapter, the FieldScout displays readings in centibars (cb)expressing the tension with which the water is retained in the soil.
Advantages over alternatives
In comparison to Watermark resistive probes, the FieldScout with SM100 or SMEC300 delivers directly VWC and, in the case of the SMEC300, also EC and temperatureThe FieldScout is a multi-depth wireless network, with greater stability against salinity variations and less maintenance. Compared to multi-depth wireless networks, which monitor at different levels but require more complex and costly installations, the FieldScout stands out due to its portability, speed and low cost per sampling pointmaking it the best choice for quick audits and sampling.

Frequently asked questions about the FieldScout soil moisture reader
Which sensors is FieldScout compatible with?
With WaterScout SM100 and SMEC300. Also with Watermark by means of an adapter.
What is the difference between the SM100 and SMEC300?
The SM100 measures only humidity in %VWC. The SMEC300 also measures temperature and electrical conductivity.
Does it include a carrying case?
Yes, the reader is delivered with a protective soft case.
What is the difference between readings in %VWC and in centibars (cb)?
The %VWC indicates the quantity of water in the soil, whereas the centibars measure the tension at which the water is retained.
Is it difficult to use?
No. Just plug in the sensor, put it in the ground and get the reading in seconds.
Is it suitable for continuous monitoring?
It is intended for spot sampling, although it can be integrated into stations for continuous recording.
What depth of measurement is recommended?
In sports turf, 7 to 12 cm is ideal; in woody crops, it is best to sample deeper.
Can I use it with Arduino or DIY systems?
No. It is professional equipment, although inexpensive capacitive sensors are available for educational projects.
What are the benefits for irrigation management?
It saves water, reduces costs, avoids water stress, diagnoses salinity problems and keeps a lawn or crop in optimum condition.
