Biomechanical assessment is a practice that is on the rise because of its health benefits for users.
The object of study of biomechanics is movement (Amadio, 1997), which refers to the athlete's movements in physical exercise.
From the point of view of sports surface maintenance, biomechanics will have to relate to the interaction of our sports surfaces with the parameters that define them agronomically.
The evaluation of this important characteristic on our football pitches can be done by means of different tests such as the triple A trial. The Advanced Artificial Triple Athlete performs the measurement of shock absorption, energy restitution and vertical deformation capacities. On the other hand, other tests such as the hardness test y turf traction They also provide information on the safety of play on a surface.
Play safety can be monitored to prevent injuries and act on problems.
Tiloom provides groundsmen with all the latest and most portable tools on the market and digital platforms for optimal monitoring and visualisation.
The measurement of the parameters is the first action necessary to evaluate the effects of the maintenance carried out on the biomechanics, and thus carry out the necessary corrective actions to restore these properties to the optimal ranges required by the technical staff and the medical team.
What is each Triple A parameter?
- Impact absorption measures the amount of impact energy that the surface can absorb. It is measured in relative terms, concrete absorbs 0%, being the most damaging surface to a player's fall and silica sand absorbs 100%, being softer to an athlete's fall.
- On the other hand, energy restitution indicates the energy interaction between a surface and an athlete. The stiffer surfaces are the ones that give back the most energy and can therefore feel "hard" (even if they have low values of the hardness test), while generating less fatigue. Concrete returns 100% of energy and sand returns 0%, the latter being much more fatiguing to play on. .
- Finally, the vertical deformation represents the compaction of the surface during trotting, it is measured in millimetres and can help us to know the elasticity of the surface.
Tiloom provides you with the necessary tools to diagnose and correct if possible the optimal ranges for the safety of our players.
It is common that when restitution increases, absorption decreases.. Plantar fasciitis or back injuries are some of the consequences of not maintaining optimal ranges in our fields.
Depending on the results obtained with this series of tests we will diagnose if some fields are safer than others for our players.

Excellent! I absolutely agree. My PhD is based on this for equestrian surfaces and the work from my company is growing thanks to its application. What is missing for team sports like football in Latin America is enormous. All this science is unknown and colleagues continue with conventional agronomy. ??
Thank you very much for your comment Alejandra!
We are interested to know more about your PhD in equestrian surfaces.
On the other hand, if you want specialised sports turf equipment, we can help you both in advising you on your needs and in providing those tools.
